A lump in the neck is a common reason to seek specialist ENT advice. Although many neck lumps are caused by benign (not cancer) conditions such as enlarged lymph nodes, cysts or salivary gland disorders, some may be the first sign of a more serious underlying condition. Prompt assessment by an experienced ENT surgeon is important, particularly if a lump persists for more than two to three weeks, is increasing in size, or is associated with symptoms such as a sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing or unexplained weight loss.

Comprehensive investigation
The assessment of a neck lump begins with a detailed medical history and thorough examination of the head and neck. In many cases, this includes flexible nasendoscopy, allowing us to examine the nasal passages, throat and voice box for any abnormalities that may not be visible during a routine examination.
We use a range of advanced diagnostic techniques to determine the cause of a neck lump. Depending on the individual clinical findings, investigations may include ultrasound scanning, ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration or core needle biopsy, blood tests and cross-sectional imaging such as CT, MRI or PET-CT scanning where appropriate. Our close working relationships with experienced radiologists and pathologists ensure that investigations are performed to the highest standard, enabling timely and accurate diagnosis.

Where surgery is required, we offer expert management using modern surgical techniques tailored to each patient’s condition. Equally importantly, many neck lumps do not require surgery, and we are committed to providing honest, evidence-based advice so that patients receive the most appropriate treatment while avoiding unnecessary procedures.
