Expert assessment for head and neck cancer
Our team of consultant ENT surgeons provides specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients with suspected or confirmed head and neck cancer. We recognise that symptoms such as a persistent neck lump, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, mouth ulcers or throat pain can be worrying, and we offer rapid access to expert evaluation and investigation.
Our aim is to establish an accurate diagnosis as quickly as possible, providing reassurance where appropriate and ensuring that patients receive the best evidence-based treatment. At such a worrying time, accessibility to our team — whether to ask a question of our team of secretaries or to be seen in clinic that very week — makes the journey that little bit easier.
Rapid diagnosis and investigation
Early diagnosis is one of the most important factors in achieving the best outcomes for head and neck cancer. We offer comprehensive diagnostic assessment using the latest techniques, including flexible nasendoscopy, ultrasound assessment, imaging (e.g. CT, MRI, PET), fine needle aspiration and biopsy where indicated.
We also provide expert second opinions for patients who have already undergone investigations, or who would like further advice regarding their diagnosis or treatment options.
Multidisciplinary cancer care
Head and neck cancer treatment requires close collaboration between multiple specialists. As active members of the regional Head and Neck Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) in the NHS, which covers all of East and West Kent, we work alongside oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, maxillofacial and reconstructive surgeons, specialist head and neck nurses, speech and language therapists, dietitians and restorative dental teams.
Every patient benefits from a carefully coordinated treatment plan based on national guidelines, current evidence and the combined expertise of the multidisciplinary team. This collaborative approach ensures that all available treatment options are considered, and that care is tailored to each individual’s diagnosis, overall health and personal priorities.
Advanced surgical expertise
Our surgeons have extensive experience in the treatment of cancers affecting the throat, larynx (voice box), salivary glands, thyroid and neck. We perform the full range of head and neck cancer surgery, from diagnostic procedures to complex tumour resections and neck dissections.
Where appropriate, we offer minimally invasive techniques, including transoral robotic surgery (TORS). For selected patients, robotic surgery allows cancers of the throat to be removed through the mouth without external incisions, helping to reduce post-operative discomfort, shorten recovery times and preserve swallowing and speech wherever possible.
When more extensive surgery is required, we work closely with specialist reconstructive colleagues to optimise both cancer outcomes and long-term function; this often means transferring patients into the NHS.
